Larkin High School, situated in School District U-46, stands as one of five prominent high schools in Illinois' second-largest K-12 unit district. Established in 1962, it embodies a public, four-year comprehensive educational institution, boasting a certified staff comprising approximately 150 administrators, teachers, and counselors. Enrollment for the 2020-2021 academic year reached around 2100 students, with an expected graduating class of 422 seniors. Accredited by both the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools and the Illinois Department of Education, Larkin High School proudly hosts the Visual and Performing Arts Magnet Academy. This specialized academy provides focused training and curriculum across various disciplines, including Dance, Vocal and Instrumental music (encompassing orchestra and band), Drama, and Visual Arts (comprising Painting, Drawing, Sculpture, Ceramics, and Photography).
Demographically, our student body reflects a vibrant blend, with 67 percent Hispanic, 16 percent Caucasian, and nine percent African American students. Moreover, approximately 75 percent of our students benefit from free or reduced lunch programs.
Larkin High School offers a rich academic landscape, presenting over 200 courses aimed at challenging students to realize their full potential and explore diverse interests. Courses typically span fifty minutes, five days per week, with students earning one credit per semester upon successful completion, except for selected Advanced Placement and Academy classes, which meet for 1.5 periods per day, yielding 1.5 credits.
Graduation requirements for the class of 2017 encompass 40 semester credits, comprising diverse subjects such as English, Mathematics, Physical Education, Sciences, History, and elective offerings. Furthermore, the school provides a robust Advanced Placement (AP) program, encompassing subjects like Biology, English Language and Composition, Macroeconomics, Spanish Literature, and others, with 890 course enrollments reported.
A prominent feature of our academic landscape is the Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program, which sees 464 students enrolled this year. AVID students are mandated to partake in the Honors program as Sophomores and the AP program during their Junior and Senior years. Last year, AVID students collectively earned over $1,500,000 in scholarship awards.
In terms of recognition, Larkin High School's achievements are numerous. Twenty-one students from the class of 2017 were designated as Illinois State Scholars, while the school also boasts representation on the School District U-46 School Board. Additionally, our Varsity Basketball and Soccer teams continue to excel in the Upstate 8 Conference, with the basketball team advancing to the "Sweet 16." Notably, Larkin High School has attained Platinum status in PBIS for the Midwest Region for the third consecutive year, a distinction achieved by less than 10 percent of high schools nationwide. Remarkably, it stands as the sole high school in Illinois to secure this prestigious accolade for three consecutive years.

School District U-46 serves families residing in 11 communities spread across 90 square miles within the northwest suburbs of Chicago, encompassing Bartlett, Elgin, Hanover Park, South Elgin, Streamwood, and Wayne, along with parts of Carol Stream, Hoffman Estates, St. Charles, Schaumburg, and West Chicago. Nestled in the Fox River Valley, approximately 45 minutes west of downtown Chicago, the district spans areas within Cook, DuPage, and Kane counties. Access to our towns and cities is facilitated by major interstates and commuter rail lines.
With a student body exceeding 35,000, ranging from preschoolers to 12th graders, across 55 schools and programs, School District U-46 celebrates its diverse demographic, encompassing 95 home languages. Over half of our students hail from Hispanic families, and nearly 40 percent are English Learners, inspiring the development of our acclaimed Dual Language program. This initiative enables students to preserve their native Spanish while acquiring English fluency, fostering bilingualism and biliteracy skills for over 11,000 students from kindergarten through 11th grade. Daily interactions in both English and Spanish enhance learning across subjects such as language arts, math, and science.
Many of our staff members, from principals to bus drivers, are former U-46 students who have returned to serve and lead within their communities, embodying a sense of pride and commitment to excellence.
Recent achievements include accolades such as the Best Communities for Music Education designation by The NAMM Foundation in 2019 and 2020, exemplary ratings for Bartlett Elementary and Prairieview Elementary on the 2020 Illinois Report Card, and honors bestowed upon individuals like E.C. “Bud” Wilson, President of the U-46 Educational Foundation Board. Notable accomplishments also extend to our students, including state championships, All-State Musician recognitions, and nominations for National Student Production Awards.
At the high school level, students have access to 27 Advanced Placement courses and a Dual Credit program in partnership with Elgin Community College, resulting in numerous graduates earning college credits. Additionally, the DREAM Academy provides alternative support for secondary students focused on social-emotional growth, while national accreditations affirm the quality of our Career and Technical Education programs.
Each of our five high schools hosts a Magnet Academy, catering to diverse interests, while the U-46 Educational Services Center, situated at 355 E.
