Ontarioville Elementary School, situated in the southwest region of Elgin within an established residential area, boasts a rich history spanning back to its inception in 1931. Originally erected as a solution to overcrowding in Elgin High and several elementary schools, the school initially served students in grades 6 through 9, under the leadership of its first principal, S.C. Miller.

Originally conceived as a "junior high school," Ontarioville Elementary School faced controversy in its early years, being the lone institution of its kind in District U-46 for almost two decades. However, in 1982, the district transitioned to a "middle school" model, reassigning ninth graders back to high schools while restructuring the middle school system to cater exclusively to seventh and eighth graders.

Despite changes in educational models, Ontarioville Elementary School has remained steadfast in its commitment to academic excellence, physical health, and the arts. Over the years, the school has undergone two expansions to accommodate evolving needs while preserving the original architectural charm. Notably, the building's sturdy construction earned it designation as a fallout shelter in the 1960s.

In addition to academic pursuits, Ontarioville Elementary School prides itself on its vibrant extracurricular scene, offering diverse activities such as the renowned "Turkey Trot" obstacle course race, which has become a cherished annual tradition since its inception in 1978.

Today, Ontarioville Elementary School continues to thrive as a nurturing environment for seventh and eighth graders, with approximately 550 students enrolled. The school's offerings extend beyond academics, with a wide array of after-school programs ranging from Robotics Club to Drama Club, catering to various interests and talents.

Furthermore, Ontarioville Elementary School is dedicated to fostering positive relationships with students and providing a supportive, trauma-informed environment where all students can flourish personally and academically. With its mascot, the Warrior, and school colors of blue and gold, Ontarioville Elementary School stands as a beacon of educational excellence and community spirit in Elgin.

District 46 Overview

School District U-46 serves families residing in 11 communities spread across 90 square miles within the northwest suburbs of Chicago, encompassing Bartlett, Elgin, Hanover Park, South Elgin, Streamwood, and Wayne, along with parts of Carol Stream, Hoffman Estates, St. Charles, Schaumburg, and West Chicago. Nestled in the Fox River Valley, approximately 45 minutes west of downtown Chicago, the district spans areas within Cook, DuPage, and Kane counties. Access to our towns and cities is facilitated by major interstates and commuter rail lines.

With a student body exceeding 35,000, ranging from preschoolers to 12th graders, across 55 schools and programs, School District U-46 celebrates its diverse demographic, encompassing 95 home languages. Over half of our students hail from Hispanic families, and nearly 40 percent are English Learners, inspiring the development of our acclaimed Dual Language program. This initiative enables students to preserve their native Spanish while acquiring English fluency, fostering bilingualism and biliteracy skills for over 11,000 students from kindergarten through 11th grade. Daily interactions in both English and Spanish enhance learning across subjects such as language arts, math, and science.

Many of our staff members, from principals to bus drivers, are former U-46 students who have returned to serve and lead within their communities, embodying a sense of pride and commitment to excellence.

Recent achievements include accolades such as the Best Communities for Music Education designation by The NAMM Foundation in 2019 and 2020, exemplary ratings for Bartlett Elementary and Prairieview Elementary on the 2020 Illinois Report Card, and honors bestowed upon individuals like E.C. “Bud” Wilson, President of the U-46 Educational Foundation Board. Notable accomplishments also extend to our students, including state championships, All-State Musician recognitions, and nominations for National Student Production Awards.

At the high school level, students have access to 27 Advanced Placement courses and a Dual Credit program in partnership with Elgin Community College, resulting in numerous graduates earning college credits. Additionally, the DREAM Academy provides alternative support for secondary students focused on social-emotional growth, while national accreditations affirm the quality of our Career and Technical Education programs.

Each of our five high schools hosts a Magnet Academy, catering to diverse interests, while the U-46 Educational Services Center, situated at 355 E. Chicago Street in downtown Elgin, serves as the district headquarters. Community engagement is encouraged through Let’s Talk!, our online customer service platform.
