At Highland, the school's mission is to prepare every student for success not only in middle school but also beyond.

Every day, students are greeted with warmth and enthusiasm, emphasizing their importance in the school community. Starting the day on a positive note sets the tone for a supportive learning environment conducive to growth.

Central to the school's approach is the Highland High-5, a cornerstone of the Positive Behavioral Interventions and Support (PBIS) program. This initiative has earned Highland recognition as one of only Five Exemplar Programs in Illinois, emphasizing the commitment to fostering positive behavior both at school and at home. More information about the Highland High-5 program can be found on the school's website.

Highland Elementary takes pride in being a Dual Language School, offering bilingual instruction in English and Spanish to cater to native speakers of both languages. To learn more about the program, as well as the district's English Language Learners Department, visitors can find information on the website.

Throughout the school day, students experience a safe, structured, and supportive environment focused on meeting the rigorous standards outlined in the Illinois Common Core Learning Standards. The curriculum is carefully aligned with these standards to ensure that every student achieves academic success and is prepared to meet the demands of college and the workforce.

District 46 Overview

School District U-46 serves families residing in 11 communities spread across 90 square miles within the northwest suburbs of Chicago, encompassing Bartlett, Elgin, Hanover Park, South Elgin, Streamwood, and Wayne, along with parts of Carol Stream, Hoffman Estates, St. Charles, Schaumburg, and West Chicago. Nestled in the Fox River Valley, approximately 45 minutes west of downtown Chicago, the district spans areas within Cook, DuPage, and Kane counties. Access to our towns and cities is facilitated by major interstates and commuter rail lines.

With a student body exceeding 35,000, ranging from preschoolers to 12th graders, across 55 schools and programs, School District U-46 celebrates its diverse demographic, encompassing 95 home languages. Over half of our students hail from Hispanic families, and nearly 40 percent are English Learners, inspiring the development of our acclaimed Dual Language program. This initiative enables students to preserve their native Spanish while acquiring English fluency, fostering bilingualism and biliteracy skills for over 11,000 students from kindergarten through 11th grade. Daily interactions in both English and Spanish enhance learning across subjects such as language arts, math, and science.

Many of our staff members, from principals to bus drivers, are former U-46 students who have returned to serve and lead within their communities, embodying a sense of pride and commitment to excellence.

Recent achievements include accolades such as the Best Communities for Music Education designation by The NAMM Foundation in 2019 and 2020, exemplary ratings for Bartlett Elementary and Prairieview Elementary on the 2020 Illinois Report Card, and honors bestowed upon individuals like E.C. “Bud” Wilson, President of the U-46 Educational Foundation Board. Notable accomplishments also extend to our students, including state championships, All-State Musician recognitions, and nominations for National Student Production Awards.

At the high school level, students have access to 27 Advanced Placement courses and a Dual Credit program in partnership with Elgin Community College, resulting in numerous graduates earning college credits. Additionally, the DREAM Academy provides alternative support for secondary students focused on social-emotional growth, while national accreditations affirm the quality of our Career and Technical Education programs.

Each of our five high schools hosts a Magnet Academy, catering to diverse interests, while the U-46 Educational Services Center, situated at 355 E. Chicago Street in downtown Elgin, serves as the district headquarters. Community engagement is encouraged through Let’s Talk!, our online customer service platform.
