History in Plano, Illinois

In the early 1860s, the Marsh brothers commenced the production of their Marsh Harvester in Plano. From 1863 until the turn of the twentieth century, the Plano Manufacturing Company, as it came to be known, played a pivotal role in Plano's growth and development. As a tribute to this legacy, Plano High School has adopted the reaper as its mascot.

Plano was once the headquarters for the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Joseph Smith III, the son of the slain founder of the LDS movement, Joseph Smith, Jr., relocated to Plano in 1866 and oversaw the church's printing operations from there. However, amidst increasing tensions with the Utah branch of the Latter Day Saints, he eventually moved the church headquarters to Lamoni, Iowa in 1880. This relocation was prompted by the Community of Christ's belief that the true church headquarters was at Temple Lot in Missouri, rather than in Utah.

The Farnsworth House

Master Architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe was commissioned to design a retreat for Dr. Edith Farnsworth, a Chicago-based doctor. However, their relationship soured as the project progressed due to cost overruns and questions regarding the house's practicality. This led to a lawsuit between the two parties, ultimately resulting in van der Rohe prevailing in court. Subsequently, the County Board opted to purchase a portion of Farnsworth's land to realign Fox River Drive (known as Ben Street in Plano), necessitating the construction of a new bridge. Despite Farnsworth's efforts to persuade the County Board, including evidence of potential construction on an old Indian site, her pleas were disregarded. As a result, the road was straightened and a new bridge was erected. However, remnants of the old bridge piers are still visible to this day. Around the same time, Silver Springs State Park and Wildlife Area was established nearby, across the river from Farnsworth's house, ensuring the perpetual preservation of the land from future development.
