Park Ridge, situated in Cook County, Illinois, United States, is a suburban enclave of Chicago. As per the 2020 census, its population stood at 39,656. Positioned 15 miles (24 km) northwest of downtown Chicago, it enjoys proximity to O'Hare International Airport, major expressways, and rail transportation. Part of the Chicago metropolitan area, Park Ridge shares borders with three official neighborhoods on Chicago's Far Northwest Side: Edison Park, Norwood Park, and O'Hare.
The region boasts clay-rich soil, historically making it a prominent center for brick production during Chicago's developmental phase. Initially dubbed Pennyville to honor George Penny, the local brickyard owner, alongside Robert Meacham, it was later christened Brickton. The Des Plaines River demarcates Park Ridge from its neighboring town of Des Plaines, Illinois, situated to the west. To the south and east lies Chicago, while Niles and unincorporated Maine Township reside to its north.
History of Park Ridge
The area comprising Park Ridge was inhabited by the Potawatomie until their displacement in 1833. Serving as a convenient portage between the Des Plaines and Chicago rivers for French explorers, the region witnessed its first influx of settlers from New England and New York in the early 1830s. George Penny established a brickworks in 1854, earning the locale the moniker "Brickton" due to its prolific brick production facilitated by the clay-rich terrain. By 1910, Park Ridge's population reached 2,009, escalating to 10,417 by 1930, and further to 16,602 in 1950. By 1960, the population burgeoned to 32,625, with 99.9% identifying as white. A mere five African-Americans and 31 individuals of other racial classifications were recorded. By 1970, the population surged to 42,466.
Notably, in 2016, Hillary Rodham Clinton, a graduate of the inaugural class of Park Ridge's Maine Township High School South (1965), campaigned as the Democratic candidate for President of the United States.
