Oak Brook, Illinois, is a charming village nestled in DuPage County, United States. As of the 2020 census, it was home to a population of 8,163 residents. This picturesque suburb, situated approximately 19 miles to the west of downtown Chicago, has a rich history and a thriving present.

History

Originally known as Fullersburg, Oak Brook derived its name from Ben Fuller, an early settler who left a lasting legacy. The village's incorporation in 1958 was largely due to the efforts of Paul Butler, a prominent civic leader and landowner. His father had arrived in the area in 1898 and established a dairy farm, laying the foundation for the community's development.

Even before its official incorporation, locals had been using the name Oak Brook to distinguish their town from neighboring Hinsdale and Elmhurst. This distinction dates back to the formation of the Oak Brook Civic Association nearly two decades prior.

The village's boundaries expanded over time, including the land that now houses the Oakbrook Center shopping mall, a prominent retail destination that opened its doors in 1962.

In 1964, Paul Butler joined forces with the Del E. Webb Corporation from Phoenix, Arizona, to accelerate Oak Brook's development. Webb's construction company played a pivotal role in erecting numerous commercial and residential buildings, contributing significantly to the village's growth. This partnership continued into the late 1970s.

Paul Butler's passion for sports is evident in the Oak Brook Sports Core, a facility boasting polo fields, a golf course (formerly the venue for the Western Open golf tournament), swimming and tennis facilities, and various recreational amenities—a unique feature for a community of this size.
