Norridge, Illinois

Norridge, Illinois, is a village situated in Cook County, United States, with a population of 15,251 as per the 2020 census. It shares its borders with the city of Chicago and is often referred to as the "Island Within a City." The current President of Norridge is Daniel Tannhauser.

Name Origin

The name "Norridge" was proposed by a resident named Mrs. Link. It combines "Nor" from Norwood Park Township and "Ridge" from the nearby suburb of Park Ridge.

History

Norridge's early names included "Goat Village," owing to a resident's goat farm, and "Swamp," due to the area's lack of streets and swamp-like conditions. Norridge originated as an 80-acre subdivision extending from Ozanam Avenue in the west to Olcott Avenue in the east and from Irving Park Road in the south to Montrose Avenue in the north. In 1948, the local improvement association incorporated Norridge as a village, preventing Chicago from annexing the area. Karl Kuchar became the first village President that year.

The 1950s marked a period of growth and development, with improvements such as the paving of sidewalks, streets, curbs, and the installation of storm and sanitary sewers. In 1954, Norridge expanded by annexing land north from Montrose to Lawrence.

Norridge once housed several horse stables, including Happy Days Stables at Montrose and Cumberland, but most of these stables disappeared by the late 1970s.
