About New Lenox, Illinois

New Lenox is a village located in central Will County, Illinois, United States. Positioned as a southwestern suburb of Chicago and an eastern suburb of Joliet, it traces its origins back to the late 1820s when settlers first established themselves in the area known as VanHorne Point, situated at the intersection of Route 30 and Gougar Road. Originally dubbed Tracey in honor of the general superintendent of the Rock Island Railroad, the community underwent a name change at the request of Mr. Tracy himself. The new name, New Lenox Township, was proposed by John Van Duser, the first supervisor of the Rock Island Railway for the township. Derived from Lenox, New York, Van Duser's hometown, the name New Lenox was officially adopted for the settlement in 1863 with the establishment of New Lenox Township coinciding with the creation of Will County in 1852, following the construction of the Rock Island Railroad between Chicago and Rock Island, Illinois.
