Berwyn Township: A Snapshot

Berwyn Township stands as a distinctive entity within Cook County, Illinois, marked by its unique alignment with the city of Berwyn. This township is a part of the United States, nestled in the state of Illinois, and is under the jurisdiction of Cook County. Covering an area of 3.90 square miles (10.11 km^2), all of which is land, Berwyn Township showcases a blend of historical significance and contemporary living. As recorded in the 2020 census, the township is home to 57,250 residents and accommodates 21,037 housing units.

Established in 1922 by the Illinois Legislature, Berwyn Township is one of the rare townships in the state that is coterminous with its city counterpart. This means the township's boundaries are exactly the same as the city of Berwyn. The geographical layout of Berwyn Township is defined by Roosevelt Road to the north, Pershing Road (39th Street) to the south, Lombard Avenue (west side of the street only) to the east, and Harlem Avenue (east side of the street only) to the west.

The inception of Berwyn Township coincided with the establishment of the Berwyn Public Health District, marking a significant step in providing dedicated public health services to the community. Despite sharing the same geographical space, the Berwyn Township and the Berwyn Public Health District operate as two distinct governmental entities, each governed by its own board. In 1939, both entities settled into their current headquarters at 6600 W. 26th Street, a facility constructed with a budget of $50,000, largely funded by federal grants from the Works Progress Administration (WPA).

Berwyn Township is encircled by several other townships, including Cicero Township to the east, Oak Park Township to the north, and Riverside and Lyons Townships to the southwest, with Proviso Township to the northwest and Stickney Township to the south.

This township's strategic location, combined with its rich history and vibrant community, makes it a notable part of Cook County's fabric. With a robust population density and a significant number of housing units, Berwyn Township offers a glimpse into the dynamic interplay of historical roots and modern living. Its commitment to public health and community well-being further underscores its significance within Illinois.
