BMW Logo

The circular BMW logo, commonly known as the roundel, has its origins in the circular logo of Rapp Motorenwerke, with a black ring surrounding the company name and featuring an image of a horse head on a plinth. BMW adopted Rapp's black ring but quartered the interior with blue and white colors, reminiscent of the coat of arms and flag of Bavaria, which in turn are based on the historic House of Wittelsbach's arms. Despite its resemblance, the logo does not include the distinctive lozenge shape found on the Bavarian coat of arms due to local laws prohibiting the use of state symbols in commercial logos.

There is a persistent myth suggesting that the logo depicts an airplane propeller spinning in a blue sky. This myth likely originated from a 1929 BMW advertisement that showed the logo superimposed on a rotating propeller. However, the logo actually predates this advertisement by 12 years.

In 2020, BMW introduced a new version of the logo, which eliminated the 3D effects previously used and removed the black outline encircling the roundel. While the logo is utilized for BMW's branding purposes, it is not featured on their vehicles

History of BMW

BMW, short for Bayerische Motoren Werke AG, is a German multinational company renowned for manufacturing luxury vehicles and motorcycles, with its headquarters situated in Munich, Bavaria, Germany. Originally established in 1916 as an aircraft engine manufacturer, BMW ventured into automobile production in 1928 after acquiring Fahrzeugfabrik Eisenach, which produced the Austin 7 under license. The company's first car, the BMW 3/15, was a rebadged BMW Dixi.

Throughout its history, BMW has diversified its product range to include automobiles marketed under various brands such as BMW, Mini, and Rolls-Royce, as well as motorcycles under the BMW Motorrad brand. Notably, BMW has a rich motorsport heritage, particularly in touring cars, sports cars, and events like the Isle of Man TT.

Despite facing challenges such as the devastation of its factories during World War II and financial difficulties in the post-war period, BMW persevered, thanks in part to investments by the Quandt family. Herbert and Harald Quandt's substantial investment in BMW helped the company survive as a separate entity, preventing a potential takeover by rival Daimler-Benz.
