History While Flossmoor's roots trace back to the 19th century, it gained prominence in the 1920s as an affluent community known for elite country clubs and prestigious golf courses. The town hosted notable golf tournaments, including the 1920 PGA Championship and the Western Open in 1906 and 1912. Officially incorporated as a village in 1924, Flossmoor became recognized as the "status" suburb of south/southwest suburban Chicago by the 1970s. Over time, its demographic makeup shifted from predominantly white Protestant to a community that is now primarily African American.
