Addison, Illinois, is a village situated within the Chicago Metropolitan Area, located in DuPage County, Illinois, United States.

History of Addison, Illinois

The village was formally incorporated in 1884, initially boasting a population of 400 residents. Originally named Dunkley's Grove after settler Hezekiah Dunklee, it later adopted the name Addison, believed to be derived from a town in England or Addison, New York. In 1832, Winfield Scott constructed Army Trail Road atop a Potawatomi trail in Addison to facilitate the movement of 50 broad-tired wagons during the conflict with Black Hawk and his warriors.

In 1864, the Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod relocated its teacher training to Addison from Fort Wayne, Indiana, establishing the Addison Teachers Seminary, which operated until 1913 when it moved to River Forest, Illinois, becoming Concordia Teachers College (now Concordia University Chicago). The town was also home to the Kinderheim home for children, comprising over half its population before suburbanization. The suburbanization of Addison began in the 1960s, as developers transformed farmland into residential areas. The population surged from under a thousand in 1930 to 35,000 by 1990.

During the 1960s and 1970s, Adventureland amusement park operated in Addison at Lake and Medinah. Additionally, the Addison Industrial District was considered for the reconstruction of Comiskey Park in the late 1980s, although this proposal was ultimately rejected.
